Centuries ago, the ruins now known as Paradox Tower were home to a group of settlers northwest of the small fishing town, Codfin. It was built as a haven for the scholars and pilgrims who wished to better themselves for the good of the kingdom. Holding a small group of warriors as protection and a handful of magic users to aid in the construction, Paradox Tower was soon a busy little town, offering sanctuary to any traveler.
As the years passed, the large stone structure that was raised as a library became the town’s focal point. Magic of all kinds were practiced within its walls, even the darker arts of necromancy on some occasions. It was rumored that Elminister himself had paid a visit to the structure in order to trade and offer his advice on future plans. The celebrity guest list grew, and the nearby villages began to look at the tower for protection and money-making opportunities.
While the popularity of the settlement drew its share of attention from the kingdom, the seedy underbelly also took notice of the power and treasure holed up within its walls. It wasn’t long before a group took up arms and decided that the tower would be better served by themselves. A group of Set priests threw their forces at the tower, unleashing the fury and venomous power of their snake god upon the settlement. It was widely rumored that the clerics had been to the tower as visitors for quite a while, for the attacks were so precise and so well-planned that the defenses crumbled within minutes. Despite the wealth within and the now powerful guardians that stood at the tower gates, Paradox Tower fell to the priests who slaughtered even the lowliest creatures within.
Codfin and the surrounding villages raised their gates and protected themselves, offering no help to the tower’s inhabitants. It was apparent that the strength of the invaders was massive, and many simply abandoned their farms for the larger cities. The fishing town of Codfin would have dispersed as well were it not for the aid of Calad Brae troops returning home to their city. It was enough to bolster the town and allow it to protect itself until the chaos subsided.
To this day, no one has bothered the clerical sect walled up within the ruins. No one has seen the priests or their acolytes outside of the walls, and a decision was made to let them be, so long as no attacks came. Years and years passed with no signs of the offensive from within, and soon the ruins were forgotten altogether, turned into the stuff of bed time stories and tall tales. It is said that the snake god came down upon his priests for their inactivity after the victory over the settlement many years ago. They were content with their strength, and Set was not pleased. The rumors among Alaron include stories of the priests being turned into slimy lizard men, forced to climb the walls and sulk in their eternal home.
The high priest Zenterazilin, one of the few who had held disdain for his fellow priests and their laziness, killed many of them as a lesson to the rest, never to defy their god. Set apparently held him in high favor, granting him the same imprisonment, but in the form of a powerful hydra, to forever feast upon his lesser companions.
